Correcting Mistakes and Using a Blender

4

Category : Coloring Techniques, Instructions

If you have read my blog for any length of time at all, you know that I advocate having a white gel pen in your basic stamping stash.

I use Sakura’s Gelly Roll in white which can be purchased here.

There are certainly other options out there and some are quite good, and others, not so much.

You really need a good, high quality gel pen with white pigment ink for this to work.

Another favorite of mine is Uni-ball’s Signo broad white pen.

If you are really talented and work better with a paint brush, Copic has white pigment ink in a jar.

Today, I’m going to show you a little accident I had when coloring this very cute Touch of Depp image from Pixie Dust Studios.

I was ready to add dots to the pants when I had a blender pen accident.

My Copic blender was too juicy and dropped right into the red which immediately spread to his blue sash.

I was MAD!!!! Fitting for a mad hatter image, huh?

So, I decided it was a good time to show you what can be done when you mess up an image you’ve spent a long time on and don’t want to throw away.

I dropped two more spots on his legs to show you even more error.

You gotta be tough in this business… lol

I never try to correct red color with a blender. It just never works for me.

Another day, I will discuss color correction with a blender a little more.

1. To fix the messing red spots, I simply added another coat of red to blend in the edges.

2. Note how the color pools around the circle edges. Blender pens PUSH color. That’s why you see the color recede to a darker ring.

    3. Enter white gel pen.

I colored the areas outside the image where the red ran out of the lines.

I dot my ink on over red areas. I do one layer and let it dry completely.

If needed, add another dotted coat.

The blue area is the only area left to be fixed.

Next, I started over with my blender. I made sure it wasn’t too juicy and dotted on random areas to create the pants.

If the dots aren’t obvious enough, I redo it over the same dot, a small amount at a time.

I decided that the best way to fix the blue in this small of an area was to simply use another coat of blue.

The area is so small, it really isn’t obvious on the finished project.

I hope this helps!

Hello Stampers! Did all you mothers have a great Mother’s Day? I hope so!

This week’s Friends Having Fun sketch challenge is sponsored by Wink, Wink, Ink who has been generous enough to let us play with some of their images!

Logo[1]

The winner of this challenge will win three images from *Wink *Wink Ink!

How sweet is that!!

This challenge will close June 11th and the winner will be announced on June 12th.

The winner will be chosen from everyone who submits a card using the Friends Having Fun Sketch #2.

Here is the sketch we’re working with this week:

fhf2[1]

And here is mine:

falling_apart_color

I used the image Falling Apart.

I flipped my sketch upside down. This was actually unintentional.

I hand sketched the sketch on a piece of paper rather than printing it and then inadvertently had it flipped when I was creating the card!

Copic colors: C3, C5, R00, R11, YG91, YG95, YG63, YG67, Y21, Y23.

This is the inside. These are the sentiments that come with the image.

I hope you visit the other Sorority Sisters’ projects!

Fairy Fun Friday!!!

Category : Cards, Challenges, Coloring Techniques, Copics, Fairy Fun Friday, Spica Pens, The Prairy Fairy

I’m so excited!! This is my first challenge as a new DT on The Prairie Fairy team!!! YAY ME!!!

I’m also excited about my teammates who absolutely ROCK!

Their projects make me feel like an amateur so I guess I better pick up my game!

Thank you, Roberta…the most supreme Fairy Princess, for allowing me to be in your meadow!

Ok, let’s get started.

This week is Challenge #18 and we have been challenged to RECYCLE!

I got to use Lewis for this week’s project.

I Red heart Lewis!

Isn’t he awesome!!??

He just makes me giggle.

Did you know that if you buy images from The Prairie Fairy that you can earn Fairy Special Rewards?

YES! You SAVE on your entire order! DISCOUNTS PEOPLE! It’s worth it!

I went and found some Legos out of my son’s Lego box.

He found me out last night when I gave him this card to give to his teacher.

This is teacher appreciation week and today the kids are taking thank you cards to their teachers.

I thought this looked like a 5th grader. So voila!

I used some Crystal Effects on Lewis’ glasses!

Let’s talk about Lewis’ shirt for a minute.

Do you like it?

This is really easy to do.

This trick comes in handy especially if you don’t have many Copic colors.

I got this effect using a Copic Blender marker.

Don’t let the name fool you.

As you can see, it’s really a color remover.

It’s known as a “bully” because it pushes color around.

I used the brush tip of the marker and went over the lines two or three times carefully.

And voila! Stripes!

What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it’s all about?????

Be sure to check out the other DT projects!

Lighting & Shadows

8

Category : Coloring Techniques, Instructions

Welcome to Lighting & Shadows for Josephine Stamper!

Remember, I am not a “professional,” I am the average Josephine Stamper.

Let’s get started…

So, Josephine Stamper (i.e., ME) uses high quality, artist only models—NOT!!!

My daughter was kind enough to let me borrow Barbie for this demonstration.

Most average stampers are intimidated by shadowing and lighting.

ME TOO.

So, here is an easy solution.

Grab an actual item and stick it under a light source such as your Ott or a flashlight.

This will help you determine where to color shadows and add light areas to your images.

I’m using Barbie because I’m going to show you an example of a face at the end.

I’ve tried to angle this picture so that you can see that Barbie is standing with the Ott light shining on her from the top right side.

Here is Barbie with the light coming in from the top right.

Note where the shadows are.

The shadows are on her left side and are darker on the left side of her nose and the far side of her face and neck.

We’ll get back to Barbie in a moment…

I’ve used untouch photos so you can see the full shadows.

Here is  an example of the light coming from the right hand side behind the object.

The light is coming from the front middle in this photo.

The light is coming from the left top in this one.

See how you can use objects and direct lighting sources to help you decide where to place your shadows?

Let’s see an example:

I used E00 for this shading.

I am using Neenah white card stock and I’ve found that E00 shows up pretty dark on this paper.

I want a fair skinned image so E00 is my darker shadow.

I added a line down her right side because I wanted the light source to be coming from the right front side.

See how I took the idea of Barbie and applied it here?

I slightly changed the light position so I hope I didn’t confuse you!

Then, I colored the entire skin with E000, blending in the earlier E00.

See how smooth it looks? No harsh line, just flow.

Hope this helps!!!

Hot Mess #2

3

Category : Cards, Copics

I’m on a total roll with my hot mess cards lately!!

I just couldn’t give up on this cutie from The Prairie Fairy (my dear new friend Roberta!).

I love the image but I kept making mistake after mistake.

Don’t look too closely…there’s no contest for counting my mistakes!

LOL!!

I like the way the card looks in the end. I adore the paper, and I adore the image.

Here’s a close up of the sentiment from SU! It worked, huh?

I’ve got a surprise for Friday…stay tuned. More details tomorrow…

FHF Color & Recipe Challenge & Mojo Monday!

Category : Cards, Challenges, Copics, Cuttlebug, Friends Having Fun, Mojo Monday Sketch Challenges

Well, stampers, today I’m putting three challenges together to try and make up for lost time! Let’s get this party started!

Friends Having Fun Challenge Blog

Right about now, I’m considering beating Alison with a wet noodle. Talk about CHALLENGE!

And then there is Sarabeth and Margie. And their recipe challenge I’m behind on.

Another wet noodle, please!

These ladies really know how to issue a challenge!

Now obviously, I’m just teasing. Seriously, though, I am truly challenged.

Alison is really good at coming up with color combos that I would never dream of.

And it’s nice because she gets me out of my comfort zone.

Then I feel proud of myself for being able to complete her challenges!

I’ve been putting off Sarabeth and Margie’s recipe challenge because I haven’t been able to figure out a way to NOT use a paper cutter.

Well, ultimately I’ve failed that challenge.

But I did the rest of it!

Image

Here is Alison’s color combination.

And here is what I came up with:

I used today’s Mojo Monday Sketch. I Actually think this color combo worked for me!

I used Bermuda Bay, Really Rust, and So Saffron (SU!).

For the recipe challenge, I needed to use 3 designer papers, a shiny substance, a funny sentiment and to hand cut my papers.

That’s the part I failed on.

I did use 3 papers, Stickles, and a semi-funny (?) sentiment.

These are the Copic colors I used.

Now it’s your turn! Be sure to go on over to Friends Having Fun and play today!
